Je pense que l'on se pète les bretelles beaucoup trop facilement. 800 participants incluant les bénévoles??? !!! Sa fait pitié, particulièrement avec le bassin de population à notre disposition. Le site web est difficile a trouvé, il y a eu peu de publicité. Le dépliant dit même qu'il y a une limite de 1000 participants. On est loin du Tour de l'Ile de Montréal...

Il ne faut pas être surpris. C'est un problème de culture. Les fonctionnaires qui prennent des cours pour perfectionner leur français, ne le font pas par respect des francophones, pour amour de leur emploi, ou pour parfaire leurs connaissances linguistiques. Ils le font par obligation (ils ont pas le choix) et par l'aspect pécunier.

The circus has begun. The Liberals, ready to buy their way in to power, Mr. Chuckles Harper, who can even remember his candidates, Jack I believe in the in a clear question Layton and Jean I am a Winner Duceppe.

It's a shame that the Liberals will not be challenged by a strong national party but by regional partys. The results are most likely going to be the same.

The only good thing is that the Liberals are finally having the balls to stand up to the US dictatorship. Their (US) position is undefendable. It might be US bashing but they certainly earned it.

The US, the Geneva Convention and the use of torture

After watching the Fifth Estate, A Few Bad Apples, I cannot understand how the US can preach to China about democracy, freedon of speech, upholding the law, when they cannot even uphold basic principles of democracy. When photos depicting events at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq were made public it shocked the world. The photos showed Iraqi detainees being abused and humiliated by their American military captors. An investigation ensued and in the end, the Whitehouse argued that a few soldiers acted alone in the abuse.

The Geneva Convention stipulates very clearly the conditions for which prisoners of war are to be submitted. The Bush Administration decided that the Iraq war was a new type of war for which the Geneva Convention did not apply. Agressive interrogation techniques were encouraged by the highest levels of command. The gloves were coming off and the prisoners were made to be 'broken'. Legal scholar redefined the use of 'torture'.

The problem with this policy is that you no longer see the enemy as human beings. They are lesser than human and this opens Pandaro's box. Besides, there are a lot of analysts that say that information that has been gained through the use of torture is unreliable, due to how it has been retrieved.

The US would now have us believe that torture is now a technique that under special circumstances, is valid and worthwhile.

Unfortunately, the Bush Administration has lost its way....

André Boiclair and why he should come clean on the cocaine issue

There is something that leaves me uneasy about Boisclair's refusal to discuss his past cocaine consumption. If he is to be the next leader of the Parti Québécois, the people that are going to vote, have a right to know when it started, when it finished and how he got his coke. Because, let's face it, obtaining coke for the purpose of consumption is a criminal offence. What makes even more disconcerting, is that he was a minister at the time.

Personnally, I think he is responsible for the mess he's in. If he had been more open when he divulged his past cocaine consumption, perhaps the media would have dropped the subject sooner. Now, his is vulnerable and gives the impression of having important failed character flaws.

Is the United States of America a good trading partner

That's my question. The NAFTA panel rulings, all of which have found the U.S. countervailing duty determinations on Canadian softwood lumber to be illegal. Yet the US persists in maintaining their duties on softwood lumber. They would prefer to negotiate instead. Negotiate what? The NAFTA courts basically have said that the US has acted illegally in imposing these duties. We are their biggest trading partner and they chose to act this way? It is so typical of America in treating their Allies so shabily. Perhaps we should start thinking of limiting our oil exports. How can we have NAFTA when the US will break the rules when they feel its appropriate?
